Beginners Chess (Early Program only)

Using fun, interactive, and creative storytelling, our Early Program friends will learn the background stories behind each of the chess pieces. For example, why does the king only move one square at a time and why is the rook always “running”? Children will need to take the class to find out the answer. Children practice their executive functioning, fine-motor, and gross-motor skills as they mix, stir, dice, and blend a host of foods to produce delicious meals. For those with a little more experience in the kitchen, this cooking class provides students the practice needed to become their own sous chefs. Students do all the mixing, chopping, rolling, and seasoning as they prepare a variety of delicious meals, snacks, and beverages. In addition to taking home a multitude of treats each week, children develop executive functioning and design skills while reinforcing patience, collaboration and etiquette. Fun games and vigorous exercises reinforce key fundamentals that are building blocks to team play. This class is equal amounts sweat, fun, and basketball skill development. They will learn about different types of shots, how to make a scene spatially clear, and how to maintain the flow of an action from one shot to the next. It’s the artist’s choice in this unique design class. Students will pinch, roll, coil, or flatten to make functional or sculptural pieces. Project ideas are presented by the teacher at each class, but they are open-ended, always keeping the children’s interests in mind. Follow the lead of Fifth grade student Valentina Liu as she guides fellow techies on a journey to design, assemble, and program their very own robots. Putting the engineering principles involved in coding into practice may seem daunting, but children’s natural curiosities and persistence can lead to wonderfully fun results. Also, the hands-on experience has many benefits beyond robotics, such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Soccer players develop their one-touch and two-touch passes under the experienced coaching of veteran SocRoc instructors. Create a new type of slime each week! Starting with just glue and activator, you'll learn the core steps to create the perfect basic slime, the essential foundation for all other textures! Once we have learned the basic techniques, we will start exploring other types of slime including an edible slime, magnetic slime, and even an glow-in-the-dark slime! This slime making class is a hands-on workshop where participants explore the sensory experience of playing with slime while learning the science behind slime creation, mixing different ingredients to create various textures and colors of slime, and customizing with glitter, beads, scents, and other add-ins. $430

Dungeons and Dragons, perhaps the most popular and famous of all role-playing games, helps to develop a wide variety of skills for everyday life. The open format of the game organically invites students to weave intricate stories and to solve problems creatively and cooperatively. The academic benefits to the game are evident. Math is needed to keep track of your character’s statistics, wealth, and belongings. Literacy is employed in the reading of rules, listening to instructions, and communicating plans with each other. Board Games is as much fun as it is intellectually challenging. As a culminating activity for the year, we will take a field trip to an Escape Room! $445

Strum buddies is a group ukulele class that serves as the perfect introduction to playing this beautiful Hawaiian instrument. The class offers a chance for beginner ukulele players to build community and learn the foundations of strumming, chords, and performing. Students sing and dance to familiar songs, learn simple chords, play games, and perform thematic original songs that they create on the spot. They learn to support one another and work together while making beautiful music. This graceful and flowing style of dance continues at Caedmon this winter. Learn basic barre exercises including plies and élévés.
