Who We Are

“It is like the sun which appears at dawn or a flower just beginning to bloom. Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up herself to life.”
Dr. Maria Montessori

I can’t think of a better introduction to The Caedmon School than to welcome you with both of the quotes above and below. Caedmon takes the education of young children very seriously, and appreciates deeply the whimsical brilliance of Dr. Seuss and the rich philosophical thinking of Maria Montessori. Her respect for the innate intelligence and curiosity of every child, which a teacher must enable and empower rather than demand or impose upon, is the core of our mission and all that we do here. However, we never forget that childhood is a time of wonder, glee, and excitement.

Most important is that the theme of self-discovery and personal development in both quotes, is the essence of what we do here at Caedmon. Parents tell us that they chose Caedmon because they are able to partner with us in discovering who their child will become as a learner and as a person, and then are lucky to thoughtfully work together to find the best “right fit” for middle school years and beyond.

Over 50 years ago, it was a group of passionate parents who founded Caedmon, looking for a school that reflected the diversity and genuineness of everyday New Yorkers. The importance of that goal and that relationship with parents exists today at Caedmon, more than ever. Caedmon parents trust our specialization in the early years of learning. They know that their children will engage in an exciting, challenging program, taught by passionate, professionals who cherish children. Most importantly, they watch their children fall in love with school.

The research on young children’s education is very clear – these early years are the ones where you capture a child’s curiosity and passions. They fall in love with school or they don’t. At Caedmon, loving to learn is what we do. I welcome you to virtually explore our wonderful school. I hope you will come visit us in person, though – because there is a very special, compelling vibe that resonates in the halls of Caedmon that really must be felt.
